About Dr Kevin Tay

Dr Kevin Tay is a Senior Consultant Medical Oncologist at OncoCare Cancer Centre with broad experience caring for patients across a range of common and rare cancers. His broader oncology practice includes breast and gynaecological cancers, blood cancers, sarcoma, brain cancer, skin cancers and HIV-related cancers.

Within rare cancers, two areas have particularly shaped his career: melanoma and rare lymphoma.

His experience in these areas has been influenced by his oncology training and research in the United States, including involvement in early clinical trials of ipilimumab for advanced melanoma and two years of translational lymphoma research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Following his return to Singapore in 2010, Dr Tay joined the Department of Medical Oncology at the National Cancer Centre Singapore, where he combined clinical practice with translational cancer research. He remains actively involved in clinical research, with work published in international medical and scientific journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, Nature Genetics and Journal of Clinical Oncology.

Beyond his clinical and research work, Dr Tay serves as Chairman of the Board of the Children’s Cancer Foundation Singapore and volunteers as Director of the Blood Transfusion Service at Assisi Hospice.

Rare Cancer Areas of Focus

Rare Cancer Expertise

Expertise in Uncommon Skin Cancers: Melanoma

Dr Tay’s interest in melanoma dates back to his oncology training in the United States, where he was involved in early clinical trials of ipilimumab during an important period in the development of immunotherapy for advanced melanoma. This experience gave him early exposure to an emerging treatment approach that would subsequently help transform the treatment landscape for advanced melanoma. It also contributed to his longstanding clinical interest in melanoma and other uncommon skin cancers.

Expertise in Lymphoma & Haematologic Malignancies: Rare Lymphomas

Dr Tay developed significant research experience in lymphoma during his oncology training in the United States. He spent two years at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) conducting translational lymphoma research under the mentorship of Dr Wyndham Wilson, Dr Louis Staudt and Dr Elaine Jaffe. His research spanned several lymphoma subtypes, including diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, peripheral T-cell lymphoma, NK/T-cell lymphoma and primary mediastinal large B-cell lymphoma, giving him exposure to the biological diversity and complexity of these diseases. This experience continues to inform his clinical interest in lymphoma and other haematologic malignancies.

What Dr Tay Wants Patients to Know

Being diagnosed with rare cancers does not mean no hope and no good treatments available. Our understanding of rare cancers has advanced considerably, especially with precision molecular diagnostics available. We can personalise therapies based on the individual’s molecular profile and identify the appropriate treatment options.

Dr Tay’s Approach to Rare Cancer Care

I would always recommend a treatment approach to my patients similar to how I would treat myself or a loved one in the same predicament. With rare and complex cancers, it is particularly important to understand exactly what we are dealing with, reviewing the pathology and molecular information carefully, and then bringing together the appropriate expertise when necessary. Ultimately, I want every patient to feel that we have explored every reasonable avenue and that they have a team of specialists walking beside them throughout their cancer journey.

Dr Tay’s Broader Oncology Experience

Dr Tay also treats a broad range of cancers in addition to the rare cancer areas highlighted on this page. His broader oncology experience includes breast and gynaecological cancers, blood cancers including myeloma and leukaemia, soft tissue and bone sarcomas, brain cancer, other skin cancers and HIV-related cancers.
